NWRPO Laydown Yard
Amargosa Valley, Nevada BEC was subcontracted by MaryEllen Giampaoli, Environmental Compliance Specialist, on behalf of the Nye County Nuclear Waste Repository Project Office (NWRPO) to conduct site characterization and remediation activities at the former NWRPO Laydown Yard, located near Lathrop Wells. The property is privately owned and had been leased to NWRPO to support their investigations related to the proposed Yucca Mountain Repository Project, including conducting onsite fuel storage and refueling operations. The facility was also used by a Nye County Emergency Management Services team for a controlled burn training exercise that had the potential to generate debris containing hazardous materials. BEC conducted soil screening activities, collected environmental samples for laboratory analysis, directed remediation activities and coordinated the disposal of ash and debris at the local municipal landfill as well as the disposal of the hydrocarbon-impacted soils at the US Ecology hazardous waste landfill located near Beatty, Nevada. Characterization and remediation activities were conducted in compliance with State and Federal regulations. BEC provided support in negotiations with the property owner and the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) to develop an appropriate closure strategy for the site. BEC also provided support to ensure NDEP’s reporting requirements were satisfied. |
