Nye County Brownfields Program
Nye County, Nevada BEC was subcontracted by MaryEllen C. Giampaoli, Environmental Compliance Specialist, to assist in the implementation and maintenance of the Nye County, Nevada, Brownfields Program. BEC developed four successful grant applications to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for a total of $850,000 (under a separate contract, using County general funds). BEC was tasked with drafting the property profile forms and quarterly reports necessary to meet EPA reporting requirements, as well as a comprehensive inventory of identified and potential Brownfields sites throughout the county. Additionally, BEC has performed community outreach activities to assist in the identification of potential Brownfields sites, developing presentation materials for each community as part of its efforts. Identified sites included the first methamphetamine laboratory assessed under a Brownfields program in the State of Nevada. BEC negotiated with EPA to allow Nye County to use a portion of its institutional control funding to develop state-wide legislation, with the cooperation of health district and law enforcement representatives throughout the State of Nevada, that identified NDEP as the regulatory authority responsible for overseeing and developing guidance for cleanup of former methamphetamine laboratories. BEC worked with NDEP, the State Office of Energy, U.S. Department of Energy, and Nevada Business and Industry to promote reuse of the Beatty Bullfrog Mine and the Tonopah Airport as sites for the development of renewable energy projects. The interest in renewable energy development in Nye County that was initiated by the County’s participation in the Brownfields has resulted in more than 30 renewable energy projects proposed for construction in the County. |
